The PM Book Club is a great opportunity to talk about what you’ve read, learn something new, discover new books, and meet new friends.  Join us this month as we discuss Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction by Michelle Nijhuis.

In the late nineteenth century, as humans came to realize that our rapidly industrializing and globalizing societies were driving other animal species to extinction, a movement to protect and conserve them was born. In Beloved Beasts, acclaimed science journalist Michelle Nijhuis traces the movement's history: from early battles to save charismatic species such as the American bison and bald eagle to today's global effort to defend life on a larger scale. She describes the vital role of scientists and activists such as Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson as well as lesser-known figures in conservation history; she reveals the origins of vital organizations like the Audubon Society and the World Wildlife Fund; she explores current efforts to protect species such as the whooping crane and the black rhinoceros; and she confronts the darker side of conservation, long shadowed by racism and colonialism. As the destruction of other species continues and the effects of climate change escalate, Beloved Beasts charts the ways conservation is becoming a movement for the protection of all species--including our own.

This is the first of two Shorewood Reads 2022 community discussions. Our second community book discussion on Monday, May 2nd at 6:30 PM will follow Steven Wright's visit who will join us for a day of events on Wednesday, April 27th. 

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Dre Ross has one more shot. Despite being a successful political consultant, his aggressive tactics have put him on thin ice with his boss, Mrs. Fitz, who plucked him from juvenile incarceration and mentored his career. She exiles him to the backwoods of South Carolina with $250,000 of dark money to introduce a ballot initiative on behalf of a mining company. The goal is to manipulate the locals into voting to sell their pristine public land to the highest bidder. Dre arrives in God-fearing, flag-waving Carthage County, with only Mrs. Fitz's well-meaning yet naïve grandson Brendan as his team. Dre, an African-American outsider, can't be the one to collect the signatures needed to get on the ballot. So he hires a blue-collar couple, Tyler Lee and his pious wife, Chalene, to act as the initiative's public face. Under Dre's cynical direction, a land grab is disguised as a righteous fight for faith and liberty. As lines are crossed and lives ruined, Dre's increasingly cutthroat campaign threatens the very soul of Carthage County and perhaps the last remnants of his own humanity.

In the United States, "dark money" often refers to political spending by nonprofit organizations that are not required to disclose their donors. Dark money is also front and center in our Shorewood Reads 2022 book, The Coyotes of Carthage by Steven Wright. Join us and take a deeper dive into what happens behind the scenes of campaigns and elections with an in-person film screening of Dark Money, a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) POV documentary. Refreshments will be provided.
