SHED Talk: The Future of Milwaukee's Waterways

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

Cheryl will describe long term trends relating to water quality, wildlife, and wildlife habitat along Milwaukee’s Rivers and Lake Michigan, and touch on likely future impacts from climate change and projected development patterns statewide. She will also explore what the future of our waterways could look like under a variety of scenarios that hinge on regional investment in sewage and stormwater infrastructure, including widespread implementation of green infrastructure to improve water quality and minimize flood risk. Bring your own thoughts, questions, and predictions to share.

ABOUT CHERYL NENN:

For over 14 years Cheryl Nenn has served as the Riverkeeper for Milwaukee Riverkeeper, a science based advocacy organization working for swimmable, fishable rivers throughout the Milwaukee River Basin. As the Milwaukee Riverkeeper, Cheryl patrols local waterways, identifies problems in the Milwaukee River Basin, responds to citizen concerns, reviews permits, and helps find collaborative solutions to problems affecting local rivers.

She oversees the Citizen Based Water Quality Monitoring Program in the Milwaukee River Basin, several advanced monitoring projects (identifying sources of human bacteria, phosphorus, emerging contaminants, and chloride), the Milwaukee Urban Water Trail Project, the Menomonee River Fish Passage Project, and several stream restoration and stormwater demonstration projects in the Milwaukee River Basin.

Cheryl is on the Advisory Boards for the Milwaukee River Greenway, the Milwaukee Water Commons, the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) Environmental Health and Quality program, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Science Professional Masters Program.

Cheryl has served on the Technical Advisory Committees for SEWRPC’s Regional Water Quality Management Plan and the Milwaukee River Estuary Area of Concern Fish and Wildlife Technical Team. Cheryl is also the Menomonee River Key Initiative Coordinator for the Southeastern Wisconsin Watershed Trust, and serves on the Science and Policy Committees. Cheryl is also on the Board of Directors of Preserve Our Parks, as well as on the Board of Waterkeeper Alliance, an international coalition of 320 Waterkeeper organizations in 34 countries worldwide dedicated to clean water and healthy communities.

Ms. Nenn holds a M.S. degree in Natural Resource Ecology from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
