Monarch Madness

Posted Jul 28, 2015

Every summer, Ms. Heide gathers a couple monarch caterpillars for a science-in-action display of the life cycle. Monarchs love the gardens and natural flora abundant in Shorewood, and they even thrive indoors as long as they're kept safe and fed well. This year, we had a little surprise: what we thought was two caterpillars, was revealed to be four, and suddenly we have six! It's Monarch Madness, and you won't want to miss it.

Our first monarch emerged from his chrysalis early this morning. Here he is pictured with the second chrysalis, which is still growing.

The second monarch will probably emerge tomorrow or Thursday. If you happen to be around, we invite you to join us in releasing it into the world!

We've also got one big, hungry caterpillar and three smaller ones currently munching away at milkweed. It's a unique opportunity to see the metamorphosis of a beautiful creature in action.

If you thought you'd stop by and just grab some books and movies, think again: you might just learn about the wild world of butterflies while you're here!
