Fiction Straight from the Horse’s Mouth

Giddy-up!  For this week’s #FridayReads, we’ve rounded up some of our fiction featuring horses.  From literary fiction to science fiction, there’s a horse-themed book for everyone.

Literary

Boleto by Alyson Hagy

Alyson Hagy's Boleto follows twenty-three year old horse trainer Will Testerman as he purchases a young blood-red filly in the hopes of making something of not only her but himself as well. Unlike the men of his family who fell into a tiresome routine on their family ranch, Will desires to blaze his own path. He builds a relationship with his horse, training her patiently and telling her stories about his past and the ghosts that haunt him. While his horse is left unnamed, Will often refers to her as "Tick" or "Ticket" (which translates to "Boleto" in Spanish). With his fate intertwined with his horse, will "Tick" be the means to get Will where he ultimately needs to be?

Mystery/western

Ragtime Cowboys by Loren D. Estleman

It’s 1921 in prohibition-era California, and while the old west welcomes Hollywood, there’s still some old habits that refuse to die, like horse thievery.  When legendary Wyatt Earp’s horse is stolen, he turns to real-life detectives, Charles D. Siringo and Dashiell Hammett, to track it down.  Siringo and Hammett make their way to San Francisco where they find the thoroughbred at Jack London’s old farm, but a larger mystery unfolds.  It appears that the infamous rum-runner and politician, Joseph P. Kennedy is masterminding a major conspiracy.  Siringo and Hammett are on the case yet again, and their witty arguments seem to distract them from the perils they are about to encounter. Full of danger and entertainment, Ragtime Cowboys is an intricately plotted yarn with rich historical background and sharp dialogue.

Science fiction

White Horse by Alex Adams

After the White Horse Virus wipes out ninety percent of the earth’s population, five percent of humans are immune while the other five percent mutate into mindless, flesh-eating creatures.  Thirty year old Zoe Marshall is not only a survivor, she’s pregnant and a widow.  Prior to the outbreak, Zoe worked as a janitor for a medical research company that experimented with animals.  But, then prior to the outbreak, Zoe’s husband died suspiciously in an auto accident while a mysterious sealed vase was sent to her.  Zoe has mounting questions that need to be answered, and travels to Italy to find them.  Told in alternating chapters, White Horse flashes through the bleak realities of a broken world, with, of course, a bit of love and redemption.
