Welcome or not, Winter has arrived. Thanks to Leap Year, our big chill will be one day longer this year. With it comes a plethora of ailments – colds, flu, and the dreaded cabin fever. We may not be able to stop those sniffles, but a trip to the library is a sure cure for the winter blahs. We have the right dose of fun for all ages.
Our popular Rhyme & Read Lapsits for children, 6 to 23 months, and Toddler Times for Two Year Olds will be held in January/February and March/April. Thursday afternoon Story Times for 3s & 4s will continue through March. Registration is required for story times. Drop-in programs for kids, 6 months – 3 years include Sensory Playtimes and Pop In & Play sessions. Feeling the need to shed the snowsuits and get the wiggles out? Join us for a Special Saturday February 1 – 10:30 a.m. for a Music and Movement event led by the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music’s Elise Pennington.
Big kids aren’t left out in the cold. We have plenty of after-school action just for them. Wednesday Art Cart offers a chance to exercise their creativity. They’ll get another chance to create with bricks and blocks at Lego Club, held the first and third Thursday of the month. Lego Club is for kids in first grade and up. Tweens in 3rd grade and up can find some STEAM-y fun at monthly Tinker Labs. Tweens in fourth through eighth grade will find plenty of “fun and games” at Tweensdays. The second Friday of the month they can play video games, board games, and munch on snacks while hanging out with friends.
Looking for some free fun the entire family can enjoy together? Join us at monthly Family Fun Nights featuring crafts, building, and games. This year’s Seuss Celebration is extra special because it’s held on the “extra” day of the year – February 29. Join us for Seuss-tastical games, crafts, snacks and Celebrity Readers.
Our annual Lego Fest returns Saturday March 14. Stop in between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to see the amazing Lego structures created by members of the Wisconsin Lego Users Group. Be inspired to exercise your own building talents in our Build-a-Brick area. You can also try Lego Mindstorms and enter a drawing for Lego-related prizes. If all of that doesn’t satisfy your building bug, we will host another Building Bonanza Tuesday March 14 from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.. Drop in to . . . with Legos, Magna-tiles, Marble Run, Giant Blocks and more.
While we offer plenty of “fun and games”, we are also want to help your family tackle some of the tougher issues we face as a society. On Saturday February 8, we will host “How Children Learn About Race and How Adults Can Help.” Dr. Erin Winkler will discuss the myth that children are “color blind”, review research on children’s understanding of race at various ages, and explore how parents and educators can help children understand race, racism, and racial inequities.
