This Summer Explore A Universe of Stories

Posted Jun 13, 2019

The last school bell of the year has rung. It’s time to blast off into summer fun. The library is here to help.  The 2019 Summer Reading theme, “A Universe of Stories!” celebrates space exploration and the great beyond. Kids of all ages are encouraged to launch into some good books with one of our reading challenges. Programs for tots, preschoolers, readers, and teens run from May 28 to August 9. Stop in at the library to join the reading crew and earn a reward packet of tickets, coupons, and prizes.

Our mission is to prevent the “summer slide.” Summer slide is the learning loss that children experience during the months they are not in school. Research shows that engaging in as little as 2 – 3 hours per week of reading and other learning activities will help guard against summer learning backslide  Public libraries provide reading programs and other activities that combine reading, learning and free fun.

Shorewood Public Library’s summer schedules offers something for every interest. Terrific Tuesdays kick off June 18 with another hilarious performance by KidsPlay Theater. Other Terrific Tuesdays include Music of Fox & Branch, Miss Kim’s Amazing Animals, UWM Manfred Olson Planetarium’s ABCs of the Moon, master magician/illusionist Ardan James, and J.K. Lee Black Belt Academy.  Summer Storytimes will be held Thursday mornings at 10 a.m.. All ages are welcome, but the sessions are most appropriate for kids, 2 – 5 years. Our year-round favorites also continue during the summer including Pop In & Play for 6 months – 3 years, Wednesday Art Cart, and Lego Club for kids in first grade and older. We also have events for Teens and Tweens. To see the full summer schedule, visit the Library’s Event’s Calendar.

With the naming of a canine mascot, Shorewood seems to be going to the dogs. This summer, the Library is following in those paw prints with the addition of our Furry Fridays. One Friday a month you can stop in and meet Chobe, the therapy dog. Furry Fridays will be held June 21, July 12, and August 9 from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Dogs aren’t the only non-human library visitors. Once again, this year we will be raising and releasing monarch butterflies all summer. Stop in to watch the metamorphosis of our very hungry caterpillars into beautiful monarch butterflies.

Of course, it wouldn’t be summer without the Summer Celebration. Join us Thursday July 25 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. for trolley car tours, Culver’s sundaes, music, games, balloons, face-painting and fun with the Milwaukee Brewer’s Famous Racing Sausages.

The Summer Reading Program and Summer Celebration are made possible by the generous financial support of The Friends of the Shorewood Public Library.
