Imagine Your Story! – the theme of the 2020 Summer Library Program definitely fits this unpredictable year. We are living a story we never would have imagined in January. We will be telling the story of 2020 for decades to come. Just imagine the stories our children will tell their children.
Somehow we are all finding ways to adjust and adapt to these ever changing circumstances. The Library is doing the same. We believe it is more important than ever to keep kids engaged in reading and learning. We will offer our traditional summer reading programs and events with some new twists and tweaks.
This year we are very excited to offer an online version of the summer reading programs. You can sign up and track reading at shorewoodlibrary.beanstack.org or download the free Beanstack app. Of course, young readers may still sign-up in person and track reading in a printed folder. Readers who complete their reading folders by August 15 will still receive a Congratulations Reward packet, although the packets look a little different. There will be fewer tickets and coupons since most of our supporters were not able to donate this year. This year’s readers will get to choose a book for their home libraries. What better reward for a reader than a book?
We also know that reading isn’t the only path to learning, so this summer we also have a set of age-appropriate fun learning activities that kids can choose to complete.
Our programs will be a mix of virtual and in-person events. You can find the complete schedule on our Events Calendar.
In July, Tuesdays will still be terrific. The popular Terrific Tuesday series will be Facebook Live events. When possible, a limited in-person audience will be allowed. Pre-registration will be necessary to ensure safe distancing.
Each Wednesday, Ms. Susan will still post instructions for a fun craft on our website. Beginning in July, you will be able to pick up Art Cart supplies at the library to take home. Family Fun Nights will also become “to go” events. One Tuesday a month we will have carry out crafts the entire family can enjoy.
Rhyme Time Tuesday will continue to be Facebook Premiers, but July story times will be in-person. You and your little ones can experience “library on the lawn” as we take story times outdoors to allow for safe physical distancing while still enjoying time together. (Pre-registration will be required for each session.)
Leo, our favorite bookworm/caterpillar will once again be exploring Shorewood. Each week, we will post a picture of Leo’s adventures on our website. Guess where Leo is. If you are right, you will be entered in the drawing for a gift card for Shorewood business.
Of course, our real monarch caterpillars are also back. Stop in at the library to see their progress or follow them on the Shorewood Monarch Project’s Facebook page.
