Reading Race: Community Conversations
Join your neighbors to discuss one essay per evening from Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book We Were Eight Years in Power. Challenging yet critical topics such as mass incarceration, reparations, segregation and systemic racism will be discussed during the course of 2018. We Were Eight Years in Power brings together a selection of Coates' essays published in The Atlantic during Obama's presidency, from 2008 through January 2017. The book is in high demand at the library, however the essays in their original version (and excluding the introduction) are available online and linked below.
Between the kickoff event on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2018 (Monday, January 15, 6:00-7:30 p.m.) and the final conversation on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2019 (Monday, January 21, 2019,6:00-7:30 p.m.), Reading Race will take place on the second Thursday of every other month, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Shorewood Village Center meeting rooms, on the lower level of the Library.
Come to one, or come to all. Join the conversation anytime!
